Winter Hike to the Newts

Writer: CesyliCesyli

Where: Briones Regional Park, Martinez Briones Road, Briones Road Staging Area

When: Winter months (especially after rain!)

Stroller Friendly: Today, it was! But, I think that on a rainy day, it might get too muddy to effectively push

Parking: Many people park along the road. We didn’t have any trouble locating a spot right next to the trail

Trail: The trail we took was the Old Briones Road trail, it’s a wide dirt path and there were many people and dogs on it.

Dogs: You CAN bring furry friends on this path, it says that you should keep your buddy on leash due to grazing cattle.

Where do we find newts? The newts are in lagoons at the end of the trail through a gate. One of the lagoons (the first you’ll encounter) was much easier to spot them and their egg sacks! It was very neat for my four-year-old, she loved watching them swim and seeing how they moved.

Cell Signal: I honestly didn’t think my signal would hold up because I’ve had trouble in other areas of Briones, but it totally did!

Cost: No cost to hit these trails and no funds needed to enter/park.

Note: We are wearing non-powdered vinyl gloves to protect both the newt and us. Newts can absorb toxins through their skin and can be hurt by a product you have on your hands (lotion, hand sanitizer, soap....) as well as the oils that naturally occur on your skin. They harbor salmonella which could harm you/ your child. It was also noted that you should wet your hands prior to picking up a little guy. If you are going to do the hike, please be mindful of these creatures and the journey they go on each year. Wonderful to experience, but great care should be taken.
